If you own an iPhone, then you’ve probably thought at least once “I wish it was waterproof”. We know we did, especially when some of us dropped it into water (yikes). Well, you’ll be glad to hear that Apple has filed a patent called “Methods for shielding electronic components from moisture”, which hints at the possibility of waterproof Apple devices.
“Many electronic devices are susceptible to water damage because they are not fully sealed and include various openings for charging, connecting peripherals, and inputting and outputting audio”, says the patent filed on March 31, 2014 and published on March 5, 2015.
Apparently, Apple will use hydrophobic coating, one to 10 microns thick, which will prevent water from getting to the major openings of your device. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said that you can wear the Apple Watch in the shower, but this doesn’t mean it is waterproof, perhaps only water-resistant. So it’s definitely about time Apple started making waterproof devices.
Samsung’s Galaxy S5 is waterproof, as well as Sony’s Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact, and the Xperia M4 Aqua. Samsung left this feature off its new flagship phones, and it’s unclear whether the Xperia Z4 will be waterproof.
